Spam Musubi

Spam musubi is a classic Hawaiian favorite with grilled Spam, sticky rice, and nori. It’s sweet, savory, and surprisingly easy to make at home.

Spam Musubi is an iconic Hawaiian snack made from grilled Spam, seasoned sticky rice, and roasted nori. This recipe yields about 8 musubi and is quick to make: about 25 minutes prep and 5 minutes active cook time (30 minutes total). The Spam is briefly marinated in a sweet-salty mixture, pan-fried until slightly crispy, then pressed onto sushi rice and wrapped in nori for a portable, satisfying bite.

Summary

Overview of the process: - Slice and marinate Spam in a mixture of oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sugar for 15 minutes. - Drain and pan-fry Spam until slightly crispy. - Use a musubi mold (or press by hand) to form 1 to 1 1/2 inch blocks of sushi rice on a sheet of roasted nori. - Optionally sprinkle furikake on the rice, top with the cooked Spam, then wrap and seal the nori. Serve warm.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces Spam
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • Nori (roasted seaweed used for sushi, cut into halves or thirds)
  • 6 cups cooked sushi rice
  • furikake ((optional))

Directions

  1. Slice the Spam into about 8-10 slices depending on how thick you like it. Place it in a Ziplock bag. Mix oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sugar until sugar is dissolved and add to the bag with the Spam. Marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Drain off marinade and fry Spam on each side over medium heat until slightly crispy or until desired doneness.
  3. Place a strip of nori roasted seaweed on a cutting board (shiny side down). Place your Musubi mold across the middle of the nori.
  4. Add Sushi Rice to the mold, pressing down firmly and evenly so there is about 1-1 1/2 inches of rice. Dip the mold and your fingers in water as you go to prevent sticking.
  5. Optional: Add a sprinkling of furikake (a mixture of sesame seeds and little bits of nori) for extra flavor.
  6. Next, remove the mold from the rice. Now you will have a nice little block of rice right on the nori. Add a slice of cooked Spam on top of the rice.
  7. Wrap up one side of the nori and stick it to the top of the SPAM, then wrap up the other side. Just like you are wrapping a nice little package. Use a little water on your finger to seal if needed. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Yield: 8 musubi
  • Prep time: 25 minutes | Cook time: 5 minutes | Total time: 30 minutes
  • Optional: furikake adds extra sesame and seaweed flavor
